Xinwang—Ode of Luo
Snow in the Forbidden City, painting of the Goddess Luo. An night's encounter; love for a thousand years.
When Cao Zijian met Zhen Mi, he composed the "Ode of Luo," describing her as follows: Her figure, graceful like a startled swan, elegant like a wandering dragon. She shines like autumn chrysanthemums, lush like spring pines. She appears as if a light cloud obscures the moon; she drifts like the wind carrying snowflakes. From afar, she shines bright like the rising sun amidst morning clouds; up close, she dazzles like a lotus emerging from swirling waves..." Later, Gu Kaizhi created a painting based on the Ode of Luo, making it the first artwork in Chinese art history based on a literary work. The earliest extant copy of this painting, a Song Dynasty replica, is housed in the Palace Museum.
